Bhavya R. Shah, MD, and Rachel Bailey, PhD, have been awarded a $250,000 UT Southwestern High Impact Grant for their investigation of using focused ultrasound to deliver viral gene therapy to specific neurons across the blood brain barrier in animal models of Parkinson's disease. "We hope to show that we can non-invasively neuromodulate motor function using viral gene therapy and focused ultrasound," Dr. Shah says. "Being able to deliver therapies without worrying about injury is exciting and novel, and could be applied to all sorts of neurologic and psychiatric diseases and is not limited to just this disease model."
