Artificial Intelligence and Medical Simulation (AIMS) Lab

The Artificial Intelligence and Medical Simulation (AIMS) Lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a leader in the creation of virtual reality simulators designed for surgical training and medical education. Our goal is to transform medical training by integrating advanced technologies into our simulation platforms. Central to our work are AI-driven solutions that enhance the learning experience and ensure unparalleled precision and accuracy. These solutions include:

  • VR Simulators for Surgical Training: Creating immersive virtual reality environments that mimic real-life surgical scenarios, allowing trainees and physicians to practice and refine their skills in a risk-free setting.

  • AI-Driven Feedback: Utilizing artificial intelligence for real-time intraoperative and postoperative feedback and assessment.

  • Automated Surgical Video Segmentation: Utilizing AI to accurately segment surgical videos, allowing for detailed analysis and targeted training.

  • Surgical Tool Recognition: Implementing machine learning models to recognize and track surgical tools in real-time, providing immediate feedback, coaching, guidance, and assessment.

  • Comprehensive Skills Assessment: Developing assessment tools that offer comprehensive evaluations of surgical skills, ensuring trainees receive detailed and constructive feedback.
