Dr. DeMartino

George N. DeMartino, Ph.D.

George N. DeMartino, Ph.D., holds the Robert W. Lackey Professorship in Physiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. DeMartino graduated from Union College with a degree in chemistry and received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. His graduate work, in the laboratory of Dr. Leon Miller, involved discovery and characterization of new lysosomal proteases and began his career-long interest in the mechanisms, function, and regulation of intracellular protein degradation.

After postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Alfred Goldberg at Harvard Medical School, he began his own laboratory in the Department of Physiology at UT Southwestern, where he has spent his entire independent research career.

The DeMartino Lab has studied many molecular and cellular aspects of intracellular protein degradation and has been part of the rise of this field to scientific and medical prominence. Dr. DeMartino has served in numerous scientific review, editorial, and advisory capacities and is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
