Liver Transplant Survivorship
Identifying trajectories of recovery and at‑risk individuals in need of interventions

Dr. Lieber’s lab is leading the first liver transplant survivorship research program. Our research leverages a robust and rapidly growing liver transplant program at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW).

Survivorship—a well-recognized concept in cancer care—encompasses the lived experience of going through a life-saving and life-changing surgery. This research moves beyond patient and graft survival and includes patient-reported symptoms, functioning, and quality of life. The goal of our research is to understand:

  1. How patient recoveries evolve after liver transplantation?
  2. How to predict the trajectory of recovery after liver transplantation?
  3. What are the physical, emotional, psychological and financial challenges faced after liver transplantation? What are resources, programs, and interventions that can help support survivors and their caregivers before and after liver transplantation.
