I am a practicing cardiologist with a strong interest in translational research. I also have a long-standing interest in developing NMR methods for the analysis of intermediary metabolism in both animal models and human subjects. I have been working in biological NMR spectroscopy for >25 years and for much of this time my work was devoted to basic questions in 13C NMR spectroscopy, 2H NMR spectroscopy, intermediary metabolism, and mathematical modeling. More recently I have become intimately involved in the development of 13C hyperpolarization, which is an exciting new NMR technology that provides an opportunity to image patient metabolism in real-time. UTSWMC also recently installed a cyclotron in our collaborating team in the Department of Radiology. We have all the tools necessary for students at all levels to learn about metabolic imaging of physiology and disease and I am excited to participate.

I have a passion for developing MRI agents that report metabolic parameters in vivo such as pH, redox, glucose, glycogen, and other small metabolites and ions. Most recently, we designed a Gd3+ agent that senses Zn2+ in vivo and has demonstrated its potential use for monitoring Beta-cell function.

My background also includes 40 years of experience in an academic center working with students, postdocs, & faculty on various topics ranging from the development of new imaging agents including Gd-based T1 MRI contrast agents, PARACEST agents for MRI metabolic imaging, and 13C enriched substrates as tracers of metabolism in vivo.

As Director of the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC), I serve on the Campus Advisory Committee for all small animal imaging equipment (predominantly MRI, PET/CT, and SPECT/CT) used by members of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.

I am also excited to be a Mentor for the recently established graduate Bioengineering Track of Biomedical & Molecular Imaging (BMI).
