The meningioma translational immunology laboratory is headed by Dr. Matthew Sun, a neurosurgeon–scientist in the Department of Neurosurgery at UT Southwestern, dedicated to transforming the treatment of meningiomas through cutting-edge brain tumor immunotherapy research for the most common brain tumor in adults.
The laboratory, located within the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center on the UTSW campus, investigates the complex tumor immune microenvironment of malignant meningiomas, with the goal of designing precise, targeted immunotherapies. We focus on developing innovative approaches such as adoptive T cell therapy, combined with radiation and immune checkpoint inhibitors, to bring these strategies from bench to bedside.
Our mission is to translate fundamental discoveries about the immunobiology of these brain tumors into novel, effective treatments, and to ultimately rigorously test them in clinical trials.
Trainees in our lab will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, cancer immunology, and translational immunotherapeutics—contributing to research that has direct potential to change patient outcomes.
Research
Our research focuses on developing and testing novel immunotherapies for meningiomas as well as on understanding the tumor immune microenvironment of meningiomas and other skull base tumors.
