WISMAC night

April 2024

Wonderful night with WISMAC members

Dr. Zaman has been a member of WISMAC, the Institutional Standing Committee of UTSW Medical Center, since 2023. She was part of the organizing committee that arranged this year's event featuring Visiting Professor Dr. Catherine M. Bollard, an accomplished scientist and the Dr. Robert J. and Florence T. Bosworth Distinguished Professor of Cancer and Transplantation Biology Research. Dr. Bollard is also the Interim Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Children’s National Hospital/Children’s National Research Institute, interim Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Associate Dean of Pediatric Academic Affairs, and Director of the Center for Cancer and Immunology Research at Children’s National Hospital at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Following Dr. Bollard’s keynote lecture, all the WISMAC members gathered at Dr. Naomi Winick’s house to welcome Dr. Bollard. It was a lovely evening with all members of WISMAC. Dr. Winik is an amazing cook! She prepared a delicious meal for all 16 members and our invited speaker. It was truly a night to remember.

Dr. Zaman's seminal work was acknowledged in the publication 'Fight Heart Disease, Like Cancer‘

As an accomplished Cardiologist and Professor of Internal Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Michael McConnell recalls Dr. Raiyan Zaman's research during her postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford in his latest publication, "Fight Heart Disease, Like Cancer" and concluded a chapter titled “Cancer and Heart Disease Intertwined” on how Dr. Zaman’s seminal work on a novel catheter PET scanner would convert radioactive signal from FDG into light for closeup imaging of plaque inflammation. Dr. Zaman’s work provided another opportunity for cardiologist to learn how to image heart disease like an oncologist by providing guidance on identifying malignant plaques that need treatment. What a wonderful lifelong connection! Let's continue to fight side by side in heart disease research!
