
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 12-17
- Meet DSM-5 criteria for an eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), or an Other Specified Eating Disorder (OSFED)
- Currently in treatment at Children's Health Plano Center for Pediatric Eating Disorders at the PHP or inpatient level of care
Eating disorder onset typically occurs in adolescence and young adulthood, times of significant social and emotional change. Previous research in adolescents with eaet has revealed differences in social processing in behavior compared to healthy controls, but it remains unclear whether these differences are preexisting or a consequence of the illness. This study aims to improve understanding of this aberrant social processing by evaluating these processes in adolescents with eating disorders over time. Web-based computational tasks are employed to provide quantitative metrics of social behavior.
Study Overview:
Study duration is approximately six months. After a brief consent/screening session, participants will be asked to complete assessments at four timepoints: initial (at enrollment), 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. The assessments will include questions about clinical symptoms, self-report questionnaires, and computer games. The first visit will take place in person on the eating disorder unit at Children's Health Plano, while follow-ups can be completed either virtually or at UT Southwestern in Dallas.
