Meet the Principal Investigator

Ezra Burstein, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Burstein is a gastroenterologist and physician-scientist.  He received his medical degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru, and completed Internal Medicine residency training at UT Southwestern and Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Michigan. His research training was under the mentorship of Dr. Gary Nabel at the Vaccine Research Center at the NIH, and under Dr. Colin Duckett, at University of Michigan. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. After completion of his training, he joined the Faculty at the University of Michigan (2002-2008) and was recruited to UT Southwestern in 2008, joining the Departments of Internal Medicine (Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases) and Molecular Biology. He has served as Division Chief of Digestive and Liver Diseases, and as Interim Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.  He currently serves as Director of the Inflammation & Digestive Diseases Research Center, and as Director the Jean Wilson Society for physician-scientists, in the Department of Internal Medicine.
