Multiple positions for graduate students, visiting graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research instructors are immediately available in the Medical Artificial Intelligence and Automation (MAIA) Lab at the UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in field of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. Our mission is to innovate, develop, and apply AI technologies to empower clinicians—especially those with less experience or limited resources—for improved patient care.
Our goal is to empower clinicians with intelligent medical devices and computer algorithms from three aspects: 1) Improve accuracy by retrieving hidden information from patient data/images when there is ground truth; 2) Improve efficiency by automating clinical procedures; and 3) Transfer expertise to less experienced clinicians by learning from experienced clinicians when the ground truth is difficult or impossible to obtain. Specifically, we will be using cancer radiation therapy as the major platform for the development and testing of new AI algorithms and ideas.
Ph.D. Students
We are hiring multiple Ph.D. students through the Medical Physics Track of our Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program. The students will work with MAIA Lab faculty to develop and use AI technologies to improve patient care. Candidates are expected to have some research experience in deep learning.
Visiting Graduate Students
We also have multiple positions for visiting graduate students in the Lab. Students who are currently registered in other graduate programs, either domestic or international, are welcome to spend a year or two at MAIA Lab. Again, the students will work on AI-related projects and are expected to have some research experience in deep learning.
Postdoctoral Fellows
For postdocs, we are looking for highly motivated Ph.D. graduates in the fields of computer science, data science, bioinformatics, applied mathematics, biomedical/industrial/electrical engineering, or other engineering and physical sciences with experience in deep learning. Demonstrated research experience and publication record are necessary. The postdoctoral positions at UTSW are full-time research positions. Initial appointment will be for one year with renewable appointments for subsequent years.
Research Instructors
For research instructor positions, candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in relevant fields and a strong publication record related to deep learning research. Typically, the candidates should have two or more years of postdoctoral experience. These are junior faculty positions and successful candidates are expected to apply for research grants together with senior faculty in the Lab. Promotion to assistant professor is possible, depending on research productivity and success in acquiring extramural funding.
For all candidates, curiosity, open-mindedness, creativity, persistence, and collaborative work ability are the key personal skills we target. Programming skills in Python, Java or C++, and being familiar with deep learning methods, are expected. A strong interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary research is required.
