Blue Steel Resilience Building Program Pilot
The first cohort of students recently completed a novel resilience building program created from research gathered within our very own CDRC - Blue Steel. Student athletes from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) engaged in principles of positive psychology empowering students with resilience building strategies for use throughout their lifetime. This education initiative has gained significant momentum since August 2023, and to date has impacted 346 students across 11 different sports. Under the direction of Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, Adrienne Mays, DDS, MEd leads the Blue Steel program implementation. Other members of the Blue Steel team include Amber Barker, MA, Lynnel Goodman PhD, Erin Harper, PhD, Chen Lin, MS, and Shane Snyder PhD.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Dr. Jane Foster, PhD, was featured in Microbiome Insights blog for International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Women and Girls in Science – recognized on February 11 – is a chance to promote full and equal participation in science for women and girls. Dr. Foster’s work at the UTSW Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care involves basic and clinical research, while investigating how microbes and the immune system affect the brain and behavior, focusing primarily on how the impact pertains to depression. The research linking gut microbiomes to anxiety has been underway for some time now, and Dr. Foster’s work continues to elevate, as she expresses in the blog post, “Our biomarker research program at the CDRC aims to use a microbiome-informed approach that can lead to the development and validation of a blood or stool test to directly guide prevention and intervention approaches for depression in psychiatry – and more broadly, in the context of physical health conditions.”

Inspirational Mentor Award
CDRC Manager of Clinical Research, Ronny Pipes, was chosen as a recipient of the Business Resource Group (BRG) Inspirational Mentor Award for his contribution as a mentor during the 2023 program cycle. His mentee, Trizzy Bui, spoke of Ronny’s “unwavering dedication and commitment beyond the ordinary.” She also highlighted how engaging Ronny was and his guidance in her journey over the past year, a year that included Trizzy receiving two promotions. Upon acceptance of the award, Ronny focused on Trizzy’s commitment to her personal and professional goals, noting he had the privilege and opportunity to watch the “rising star grow and succeed.” Ronny was honored during the 2024 Mentorship Program Launch on January 31, commending his commitment to “fostering growth, providing insightful guidance, and serving as an inspiration to others” a sentiment shared with all.

TX-YDSRN Symposium
In September, the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN) hosted a scientific symposium to bring partners from across the state of Texas together with the goal to foster collaboration and shape the vision for the upcoming biennium. Presentations from across the Network highlighted significant accomplishments and best practices. Scientific sessions provided an avenue for faculty and staff from each partnering institution to share their work utilizing data from the TX-YDSRN Registry study and inspire new areas to explore and publish. Tailored workshops catered to scientific writers, aspiring academics, and clinical coordinators imparting valuable insights. The symposium facilitated collaboration, examined procedures, encouraged innovation, and mapped out a path for expansion and enhanced success.

Dr. Trivedi joins media outlet, KERA's Think segment on teen suicide
According to a new study, 90 percent of Texas youth being treated for depression reported suicidal thoughts. Dr. Madhukar Trivedi is a psychiatry professor, chief of the Division of Mood Disorders and the founding director of the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why suicide attempts and suicidal ideation have increased in the last decade and how the medical community and parents can help.

The CDRC's rTMS for Stimulant Use Disorders (CTN-0108) study reaches 45 randomized participants
The purpose of the study is to determine feasibility of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for individuals with moderate to severe cocaine or methamphetamine use disorder (CUD/MUD). The study is a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial comparing rTMS vs. placebo delivered over an 8-week treatment period. After assessment and inclusion into the study, participants are randomized to receive up to 30 sessions of either rTMS or placebo treatments.

CDRC research initiative highlighted in UT Southwestern's Newsroom
The UTSW-led study included data on a diverse population of 8- to 20-year-olds receiving care in a participating clinic who screened positive for depression and/or suicidal ideation or behavior. Researchers found that they had moderate to severe depression and anxiety. Those who had attempted suicide or had suicidal ideation had more severe mental illness, poorer school adjustment and social connectedness, lower resilience, and higher rates of trauma exposure than those without suicidality, data showed.

CDRC study findings show accelerated brain aging predicts less antidepressant efficacy
Patients whose brains appear older on scans than their chronological age showed less improvement on sertraline, a first-line drug treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center reported. The findings, published in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, could eventually lead to new ways to predict the effectiveness of medications for patients with MDD, which affects hundreds of millions worldwide.

Dr. Trivedi leads CME course for Tarrant County clinical professionals
Dr. Trivedi kicked off the school year by providing additional education to Tarrant County Psychiatrists, Residents and Medical students on Treatment Resistant Depression. The presentation poses questions raised by the treatment resistant depression (TRD) heuristic for biomarker research and engaged the clinical audience in addressing the questions of whether biomarker discovery has advanced far enough to be able to prospectively identify TRD, assist with treatment matching and assess risk.

New TX-YDSRN publication in the November issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders
A recent CDRC Faculty publication will be highlighted this November in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The title, Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN) research registry and learning healthcare network: Rationale, design, and baseline characteristics covers finding from one of the CDRC's core networks. The TX-YDSRN is one of the largest prospective longitudinal cohort registries designed to develop predictive models for outcome trajectories based on disorder heterogeneity, social determinants of health, and treatment availability.

CDRC seminar with Dr. Nicolas Murphy
Dr. Nicholas Murphy will present at the CDRC Dallas site on "Decoding the Matrix: Using Electrophysiological Biomarkers to Enhance the Treatment of Depression".
Dr. Murphy is an assistant professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. After graduating from Newcastle University, UK, he completed fellowships in biomarker development for psychosis and mood disorders at UT Health and Baylor College of Medicine respectively. Dr. Murphy's research program uses neurophysiological measures of brain activity to identify patterns of information that can be exploited to design biomarkers of mood, trauma, and suicide disorders. His program objective is to create scalable biomarkers that can be easily applied in everyday clinical settings to guide practitioner judgement, and to reduce the cost-burden of failed treatments for patients.

The CDRC is committed to expanding our reach within Fort Worth's diverse communities. We proudly joined the Hope-4-Kids Foundation at their Back to School "Community Kickback" event on August 9, 2023, at Sycamore Park. Approximately 175 people were in attendance. Hope-4-Kids is a pillar of support for children and families in Fort Worth, offering essential resources such as food and clothing to help them thrive. Ashley Lowery, Clinical Research Coordinator I, represented the CDRC, and had an opportunity to share information about our research and prevention programs.

The CDRC's newest faculty member receives Fellow Status from the APA
Dr. Carmen Cruz received Fellow Status in Counseling Psychology from the American Psychological Association at the 2023 Annual Convention. Dr. Cruz attended the APA conference in Washington D.C. and provided a Fellows Talk to membership. The name of her talk was “Sometimes It Takes Time to Catch Up to How Others See Us.” Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Fellow status requires that a person's work has had a national impact on the field of psychology beyond a local, state or regional level, in order to receive this distinction.

CDRC joins the 27th Annual Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair
The Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care (CDRC) attended the 27th Annual Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair on Friday, August 4, 2023 at Fair Park where Mayor Eric Johnson hosted the signature event. The fair provides Dallas students and families with essential school supplies, valuable services, and community resources; the CDRC is proud to be involved in the Dallas community to continue impact in setting up the youth of Dallas for success. The annual event had an estimated 12,000 students and their families attend, and is a collaborative partnership between the City of Dallas, the Junior League of Dallas, Dallas ISD, nonprofits, corporations, and community volunteers such as the CDRC to serve students and their families.

In an effort to expand the CDRC's reach in Fort Worth, Dr. Erin Harper attended the Castleberry ISD (CISD) Back-to-School Kick-Off Employee Pep Rally, an event that drew the entire CISD Staff. Summer research program wraps up at the CDRC

Interactive learning event with CDRC faculty
As part of the CDRC Summer Research Program, interns had an opportunity to learn various skills weekly, including R (a programming language for statistical computing and graphics used to clean, analyze, and graph data) with Dr. Cherise Chin Fatt. On the final day of R-training, they had an opportunity to compare a fun hands-on activity using Play-Doh to coding to emulate the similarity of building blocks and shaping one’s ideas.

The Center’s own, Manish Jha, MD., promoted to Associate Professor on the Clinical Scholars Track
Since rejoining UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2021, Dr. Jha has quickly established himself as one of the leading experts on research in irritability. Over the past year, he has devoted significant time in developing research projects related to substance use disorder and bipolar disorder, both conditions that are associated with presence of irritability. In fact, his work on irritability is recognized at an international level and he is one of the founding members of the global cross-cultural consortium on irritability.

Dr. Jane Foster to present at Brain Resilience Workshop in Vancouver, BC
CDRC Faculty, Jane Foster, Ph.D., will present on “Novel approaches to identify clinical links between our microbes and mental health” at SFU's Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology.
Dr. Foster joined UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Center of Depression Research and Clinical Care in May 2022. Her work focuses on linking a person’s 30 trillion gut microbes and their propensity for mental illness. By combining basic science research with clinical collaboration in psychiatry, psychology, and gastroenterology, Dr. Foster’s research takes a ‘bench to bedside’ and back again approach to studying microbiota-brain and immune-brain systems.

Several CDRC staff participated in the annual NAMI Walks North Texas in honor of Mental Health Awareness month. With 116 Teams, and 1,240 participants, the event raised a grand total of $87,962. The UTSW Department of Psychiatry, “Team Confabulous”, helped raise $4,445.

Resiliency & Recovery Conference of Fort Worth
Dr. Madhukar Trivedi presented to over 100 mental health and substance use professionals on Friday, February 24th at the Resiliency and Recovery Conference of Fort Worth. His vision for an Integrated Care Approach will aid in early diagnosis and intervention of mental health problems. Screening and measurement-based care should be implemented in primary care settings utilizing an evidence-based screening tool such as VitalSign6.

Beautiful Science: Exploring the Mind’s Canvas in “Matthew Wong: The Realm of Appearances”
Dr. Russell Toll, Assistant Professor with the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at UT Southwestern, engaged the Dallas Museum of Art community for an exploration of the science within art and the art within science through the works of Matthew Wong on February 8th.
The sciences teach us how to reach for the stars, but the arts teach us why we reach. The interplay between these disciplines has produced extraordinary achievements from both the human mind and the human spirit. Much like Matthew Wong repainted over the same canvas many times, our own stories and experiences are written and rewritten on the canvas of our brains in the language of neuroscience.
Dr. Toll painted a picture of the need to utilize EEG imaging in prevention and TMS services for treatment of depression and other mental health concerns.

Cloudbreak and Lone Star Depression Challenge launch
Planning for the partnership between UTSW and Methodist Health System came to fruition in January with the inauguration of the Cloudbreak and Lone Star Depression Challenge launch. Cloudbreak is an initiative aimed at scaling detection and treatment in primary care settings across the regions health systems. In partnership with Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, the CDRC seeks to transform the status quo of crisis-driven depression treatment by scaling three proven solutions across Texas. UTSW leads the training and technical assistance clinical implementation arm of the project, serving as a one-stop shop.

YAM Program expansion makes UTSW News
The CDRC's Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) program helps teens recognize and better understand feelings and signs of depression and anxiety by sending trained facilitators into schools to lead sessions including discussion and role-playing activities. The program has been deployed in more than 30 schools in North Texas, touching more than 20,000 students since its launch in 2016. It is now being rolled out throughout Texas in partnership with other health-related institutions as part of the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC).

Dr. Trivedi recognized as 2022 Highly Cited Researcher
Dr. Trivedi is one of the more than 20 UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists that are among the 2022 Highly Cited Researchers listed in the top 1% of researchers from across the globe demonstrating significant and broad influence in their chosen field or fields of research. Out of nearly 8 million researchers in the world over the last decade, less than 1% have published multiple papers frequently cited by their peers that rank in the top 1% of citations for their field and a year.

The CDRC joined with more than 50 UT Southwestern colleagues for medIDEAs at the Perot for the Perot Museum’s Community Day 10th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, December 3rd to bring science into the community. This work is part of an important ongoing collaboration with partners in STEM outreach as well as the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The CDRC helped to educate over 5500+ museum guests about mental health, brain development, Texas Resilience Against Depression, Youth Aware of Mental Health, EVEXIA, and more as well as engage in several games and activities centering on the brain.

The CDRC is highlighting community involvement in the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN) where Dr. Shane Snyder visited a research site affiliated with the health-related academic institution in El Paso to build relationships with the research staff, comprehend site processes, and facilitate researchers on the project.

CDRC site leads all national sites with 23 participants randomized to date in STIMULUS study.
The purpose of the STIMULUS study is to evaluate the use of respective Transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on individuals who use methamphetamine or cocaine. Research is needed to develop new substance use disorder treatments and to determine how to best broadly disseminate the treatments that are currently available and effective. Researchers and treatment providers in the Clinical Trials Network’s Big South/West Node contribute their expertise to solving this crisis impacting our nation and our Southern region.

Dr. Trivedi joins YMCA 2022 Key Leaders Luncheon
The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas held its annual YMCA Key Leaders Luncheon panel "Spirit, Mind, & Body: supporting Mental Wellbeing in Our Youth". Over 400 guests joined the Y to hear a focused conversation about the mental well-being of our youth with featuring panelists: Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, Director of the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center; Dr. Jessica Gomez, Licensed Psychologist and Executive Director of Momentous Institute; and Sonya Parker Goode, Director of Outreach and Education at Grant Halliburton Foundation.

CDRC presents at GEM Cedar Hill Autumn Event
CDRC Faculty, Drs. Cherise Chin Fatt and Jane Foster joined the GEM event to share information about their work. The CDRC's own, Harmony Hilton presented about our newest program, Blue Steel, and the importance of resilience. Attendees included 350 female student-athletes between the 9th-12th grades.

CDRC brings Blue Steel to GEM
As part of our ongoing community engagement, the CDRC did a second Blue Steel cohort with GEM (Girls Empowered by the Mavericks) in collaboration with UT Southwestern’s Pediatric Group and the Office of Communications at Dunbar High School with over 100 student athletes. The program, for girls ages 9-14+, is comprised of various educational and interactive sessions that engage, inspire, and empower young females. These tremendous athletes were empowered, inspired, and educated with Dr. Adrienne Mays and Ms. Harmony Hilton over Blue Steel constructs of resilience, self-monitoring, and building a personalized mental health toolkit.
