Who Wants Some Cookies??

Our most important core value in the Azab Lab is working with the "human beings" in each of us, within our Lab team, as well as people we collaborate and work with, including sale representatives!

I met with John Veloria and Jessica H. from Thermo Fisher Scientific, around a year ago when I moved to UT Southwestern Biomedical Engineering, and since then, we have developed a not only a wonderful work-relationship, but also a friendship!

The first time we met, I was wearing a Cookie Monster shirt 😂 🤣 😂 🤣, which seems to have left a deep impression on them. This week, they stopped at my office and brought me this lovely "Cookie Monster" and some delicious cookies! John and Jessica, thanks for the great #work, #science, #humanity, #friendship, and #fun! You made my day 😍
Science is more fun when made with love!
Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom ... 🍪 😂 🍪 😂 🍪 😂

Post-Lunch Stop

Yesterday, after lunch, the Azab Lab team decided to stop by the #piano at UT Southwestern Medical Center ... and here is what we got:

1. Selena Ghaben played "Passacaglia" composed by Handel.
2. Kareem Azab played and sang " سنرجع يوما, Sanarji'o Yawman, We shall return one day" lyrics and composition by Rahbani Brothers.

The English translation of the lyrics is not anywhere close to the beauty of the original poem in Arabic, but I tried to get it as close a possible:

We shall return, one day, to our neighborhood
… and drown in the warmth of hopes
We shall return! No matter how much time passes
… nor how far distance will become between us
So, oh heart, hold on! and do not throw yourself
… on the road of our return feeble
It sorrows us that tomorrow will return
… the flocks of birds, while we are here

There, at the hills, are hills
… that sleep and wake up to our pledge
And people who are the love, their days are
… the calmness of waiting of mellow singing
Lands whose willows extend far as the eye can see
… over every water they become frail and bent
Noon times are imbibing, under their shade,
… the fragrance of calmness and pureness of joy

We shall return! The nightingale acquainted me
… when we met earlier at a bend
That the bulbuls are still
… there, living with our poems
And there is still, between the hills of yearning
… and the people of yearning, a place for us
So, oh heart, how winds have expatriated us
… Come! We shall return! Let’s go!

Come! Join Us! for the #Science, the #Music, and the #Cultural #Diversity.

Different work today

When you have to write two #R01's, an S10, and a few foundations #grants for the June cycle ... what is the best way to boost your #creative spirit and keep your #LifeBalance ?
You start a #DIY woodwork project! ... and as "collateral damage", you get a new set of furniture for the backyard 😂🤣!

I bet #HomeDepot loves my grant-writing seasons! 😂 🤣

Throwback!

Yesterday, I visited the #construction site for the new building of the UT Southwestern Biomedical Engineering Department, designed with the latest technologies. I visited the location of my future laboratory and office, and closely followed all the construction and technical details. The #workers around us worked diligently and energetically, all in harmony and integration to make a beautiful building. Just like a #cell, each organelle does its work in harmony and integration for the continuation of life.

But what I felt most about this visit was a "strange" feeling of "belonging", as soon as I entered the building. Construction sites have a special “smell”, and the buzzing of the construction machines has a special “rhythm”, only those who work/worked there can feel it. As soon as I “smelled the construction” and “heard the rhythm”, I was taken back to days that were among the most beautiful days of my life.

After I finished high school and before entering university, I worked in many #jobs, such as paving streets, paving the sidewalks, handyman home repairs, and as an electrician. Despite the hardship of working physically, #construction work environment gives a special feeling of productivity and satisfaction. It is a feeling of creating something out of nothing, so you feel overjoyed every time you finish a project. Just like in #science when you make a new discovery or when a patient gets benefit from a product of your work.

O my beloved #hardworking people ... you who earn your livelihood with dignity and sweat ... raise your heads high and stand up tall ... we all owe you much of the development and luxuries we live in.

(Photo: Me at 18 years old, as an electrician, my clothes and body are covered in dust, but my smile is big and real ... accompanied with the two indispensable “weapons” of an electrician: an angle grinder and a heavy duty hammer-drill).

Lets talk about music

#Science and #Music are two faces of the same #creative phenomenon.
I have developed a tradition of starting to play a new musical instrument with every development in my scientific career and/or every new city I move to:
‘Ara (middle and high school): Piano
Jerusalem (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem for BPharm): Guitar
Jerusalem (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem for For MSc/PhD): Oud (middle eastern lute)
Boston (Harvard University for PostDoc): Violin and Percussion
Saint Louis (Washington University in St. Louis as Assistant Professor): Ney (Arabic flute) and Ukulele
Dallas (UT Southwestern Medical Center as Associate Professor): Buzuq (the Arabic version of Bouzouki or Saz)

So, let the fun begin!

Thanks Jere!

When you are surrounded by wonderful people at UT Southwestern Department of Biomedical Engineering ... It makes work an enjoyable experience that you look forward to, every single day. Thanks Jeresia Henson for you kind words, the lovely (early) Christmas present, and most importantly for being such a wonderful friend and colleague 💜 (the heart is the color of the hippo 😂).

Check out the story behind the hippo below!

"Today was a great day. Kareem Azab and I had an interesting conversation this morning about how different religions celebrate winter and I got on the topic of silly Christmas songs. I talked about Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, I want a Hippocampus for Christmas, and All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth. At the mention of the Hippopotamus song, Kareem told me about his love for Hippopotamus and how they are his favorite. Well flash forward to this afternoon and I’m out with my boss and another admin for shopping to decorate the office. Lo and behold, I find a purpose Hippopotamus wearing a pink tutu, and a Santa hat that dances to the song. It was too perfect. I insisted that we include it in the office decoration. It was wonderful to see the joy on his face when I gave him the animatronic. He was so happy to receive something like that I’m glad I moved departments because it’s been wonderful to talk with him so much. "

New Addition!

A new office at UT Southwestern Biomedical Engineering deserves a new coffee table!

The best way to make #science is #collaboration, and there is no better way to promote collaboration than a good #coffee.

The surface was decorated with coffee beans with different roasting levels: green beans, as well as light, medium and dark roast, and it was covered with epoxy resin.
