Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT)

The fundamental principle of BNCT involves the administration of a boron-containing compound into malignant cells, followed by localized irradiation of the tumor region with low-energy neutrons. The interaction between the introduced boron-10 isotopes and the low-energy neutrons leads to the emission of high-energy alpha particles and lithium ions (see video below). This results in cell destruction, which ultimately leads to the elimination of tumor cells. This unique mechanism of action makes BNCT a potentially effective and precise therapeutic strategy for combatting certain types of cancer, particularly brain tumors.

However, the emergence of BNCT as a prominent therapy has in large part been hindered by a paucity of tumor selective boron containing agents. In Our research, we focus on advanced drug delivery strategies to improve the specificity of the boron-containing agents to cancer, form improved efficacy and lower toxicity of BNCT.
